One of the most romantic weekends one can spend is visiting Nantucket, Massachusetts.
This island, which is 30 miles south of Cape Cod, is a beautiful tourist location, reachable by ferry or airplane. Nantucket, which used to be a whaling port in the 1700 and 1800's, is one of the most visited tourist attractions in New England. The island has quaint hotels, museums, restaurants, and beautiful old homes. Visiting Nantucket, from an architectural view, is like stepping back into time. The island has one of the most concentrated pre-Civil War houses in the entire United States.
An Inn I would recommend staying at is the Arbor Cottage (3 Step Lane, Nantucket, MA 02554 for reservations 877-228-0695). This Inn is centrally located to the ferry docks, the historic district, and the Whaling Museum. It is also in close proximity to many restaurants and shops. The rooms and service are tremendous. Cost for a weekend stay ranges from $100-$400 a night.
After one settles in, there are many things to do. One can walk the beautiful beaches, shop at a variety of stores, or dine at great restaurants. Some of my restaurants on the island are Black Eyed Susan's; this small establishment has a great lunch and dinner menu. Other great choices include Arno's (41 Main Street), Brotherhood of Thieves (23 Broad Street), or Cambridge Street (12 Cambridge Street).
When visiting Nantucket, one can shop for New England antiques, clothes, gifts (wicker baskets handmade on the island), and historical books. There are many books on the historical importance of Nantucket, including the fact that many whaling captains stayed here between voyages. One can visit their historic homes which have been maintained as historically important properties.
Visiting Nantucket is a great way to spend your weekend with someone special. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy. I recommend it highly. |
